example of character creation

Character Creation:

For the most part, new characters are being built normally per the Savage Worlds:EX rules with only a couple of simple additions. Because of the inclusion of a few new skills, characters begin play with additional starting skill points. The reputation, turning points, and contact creation rules should come into play after normal character generation.

The character creation process can be broken down into the following phases:

1. DECIDE ON A GENERAL CONCEPT

Jake Kenson is a street tough from among the Coalition gangs who’s been nicknamed the “Bulldog”. He’s a (mostly) pure human, and gains the normal bonus Edge that such people get.

2. ASSIGN FIVE DICE TO THE CHARACTER’S STARTING ATTRIBUTES

Jake is tough, but uneducated. His player decides on the following attributes, but hopes to add another die to Strength once hindrances are determined: Agility d6, Smarts d4, Spirit d6, Strength d6, Vigor d8.

3. ASSIGN 18 DICE AMONG THE CHARACTER’S SKILLS

Jake is a product of his environment, a survivor who knows that sometimes he has to fight in order to get what he wants, and that other times he has to lay low in order to keep what he has. His player decides on the following skill selection: Climbing d6, Driving d6, Fighting d8, Intimidation d6, Language (Imperial Standard; Native), Notice d6, Stealth d6, Streetwise d4, Survival d4. One point remains, and just to mix things up a little, Jake’s player decides that the character has picked up the Kokoran language as well; Language (Kokoran) rounds out his skill selection.

4. CHOOSE CHARACTER’S STARTING HINDRANCES

As a “Bulldog”, Jake is known for being surly and stubborn, so his player selects the “Stubborn” Hindrance. However, he’s loyal to his friends and is relentless in seeking vengeance against those he feels has crossed him unjustly. Thus his player gives him the added hindrances of “Loyal” and “Vengeful” at the level of a Major hindrance.

Using the points gained from taking Hindrances, Jake’s Attributes are improved by one die each for Strength (d8) and Vigor (d10).

5. CHOOSE THE CHARACTER’S STARTING EDGES

Jake “Bulldog” Kenson is a tough guy and has the “Brawny” Edge.

6. DETERMINE CHARACTER’S DERIVED CHARACTERISTICS

Jake has a Charisma of 0, a Pace of 6”+1d6”, a Parry of 6, and a Toughness of 8, even without any kind of body armor.

7. ASSIGN INITIAL REPUTATION

Jake “Bulldog” Kenson decides he wants some initial reputation value. He decides that in his youth, he visited Kokoran space and was involved in an incident that got his stubborn, vengeful ass sent back home to the Coalition. He takes -1 Reputation with the Kokoran Union and gains 3 points he can spend on positive reputations. He decides that he’s earned some influence with the Icon Syndicate, a large organization involved in both criminal and legal activities that has been chartered by the Coalition government to govern a large region in north-central Rakhan Prime. This costs him 2 points, and his remaining point is spent to earn a good reputation with his old crew, a small gang called the “Stray Dogs”, with whom he takes a +2 (at .5 points per plus)

8. DETERMINE CHARACTER BACKGROUND

Jake Kenson is from the Coalition, so there is no need to roll the first entry. Checking the Coalition results, indicates that he should roll on the Fringe Background (B2) table, and determine if he wears normal or fringe clothing (C1 or C2). However, before doing that, his youth environment is determined – a roll of 7 (Planetside), followed by a roll of 10 (Major City). Jake is from the city of Hightower, a megacity on Rahkan Prime which contains one of the only two major spaceports in the northern hemisphere. He chooses the Street Background from table B2, and rolls an 8 on the Fringe Clothing Table (C2), Surplus Military Gear. Jake’s player decides to handle the rest of Jake’s background randomly, and the last three rolls (3,5,9) result in Jake having an Off-putting appearance, a very wary attitude, and a belief that he is somehow destined for more than the life into which he was born.

9. ROLL CHARACTER’S TURNING POINTS

Jake rolls an 8, Professional, for his first turning point. His next roll, 2, indicates that he was “Played Like a Fool”. He rolls to determine the nature of how he was manipulated, rolling a 7 (a Co-Worker), a 5 (wanted to make Jake look bad), and a 9 (which resulted in Jake breaking the law; [7; Armed Assault]), a 5 (on a d6; He got away with it). Ultimately, Jake feels that he will never allow himself to be manipulated like that again. Ever! (a 10 [8, +2 from the Vengeful Hindrance]). Jake’s player and the GM decide that it was this event (and complications derived from it) that got him booted from the Kokoran Union instead of being put on trial and likely incarcerated for his crime(s).

Jake’s second turning point is General (11) in nature, with the result of Jake finding a Teacher/Hobby. Jake finds a mentor who helps teach him to better see how things work on the shadowy fringes of society. He takes a +1 to his Streetwise skill (Streetwise d6), and gains a contact (A +0, C d6/+2 (Streetwise), I +0) – one who ultimately proved to be Jake’s first connection to the Icon Syndicate.

Jakes third turning point is meeting a Professional Mentor (6, 10), a grizzled old prize fighter who takes Jake under his wing and hires him out to work at his gym and help him train younger fighters. This mentor is also part of the Icon Syndicate, and his gym a recruiting ground for young slags looking to make a name. Jake gains +1 die with his Fighting Skill (Fighting d10), improving his Parry (Parry 7), and earning him a new contact (A +0, C d6/+2 (Prize Fighting), I +0).

10. DETERMINE CHARACTER’S STARTING CONTACTS

Jake has six points of contacts, plus the two contacts he gained from his Turning Points. He decides to improve both of those contacts; working with the fact that Jake is somewhat off-putting and tends to be very wary of other people, it seems best to build upon the friendships he already has.

  • Salazar Kalahn (Icon Syndicate Fixer, Rahkan Prime), Availability +0, Capability d8/+3 (Streetwise), Influence +1 (Icon Syndicate) [4 Points/Cost 2]
  • Django “The Assassin” Lesko (Prize Fighter/Trainer, Rakhan Prime), Availability +1, Capability d10/+4 (Prize Fighting), Influence +1 (Fighters) [6 Points/Cost 4]

11. BUY STARTING GEAR

Jake begins play with the normal 500 credits to spend on gear. His Surplus Military Gear is made from reinforced BioPolymers with Reactive Dissipation Inserts (Armor +2/+4, Cost 300, Doesn’t Protect the Head, Second Armor Value is versus Blasters, Slugthrowers, and Melee Attacks), and he carries a concealed Knocker (Str+d4+2, Cost 50) and a polyglass survival knife (Str+d4+1, +1 to Survival Rolls, Cost 100). He has beaten old travel pack (Cost 25) with a bedroll (Cost 20) and some assorted toiletries and personal grooming products (Cost 5). The rest of his cash on hand (a whole 5 Credits!) he keeps hidden on his person. The Player and GM decide that Jake sleeps at Django’s gym.
